Knifemakers Heat Treating Kit(sku: HeatTreatingKit)
Contains 1 pair hot gloves, 1 heat treating fork, 4 knifeholders, and 8 knifeholder supports. You will need the kit if you remove all the blades together. If you remove them individually with tongs, you will need only the hot gloves and the knifeholders.
For intermittent handling of hot objects up to 400° F. Sold in pairs. Not intended for handling hot blades.
Easily removes knifeholders and blades from the hot furnace. A sliding wooden handle allows you the most comfortable position for holding the fork. 31” long.
Position knifeholder supports under the knifeholders inside the furnace. The supports raise the knifeholders so you can slide the fork under holders.
High temperature removable pins fit into holes pressed into a ceramic base. The pins hold the foil-wrapped blades on edge so heat can circulate around each blade. (Unless you have the Gas Injection Flow Meter, you will need to wrap the blades in heat treating foil, which is not included in this kit.)

1332 Gas Inlet Flow Meter GIFM(sku: 1332)
Oxygen in the furnace forms a scale on the surface of knife blades and other parts during heat treating. To avoid surface scale, wrap the parts in heat treating foil or inject an inert gas into the furnace. The gas displaces the oxygen.
Please note that the gas may reduce heating element life. Also, gas injection does not offer better results than heat treating foil nor does gas injection prevent all scaling. The main benefit of gas injection is the savings in time over wrapping the steel in foil.
The flow meter can be ordered with an optional solenoid kit, which enables you to turn the gas on or off for each segment, or stage, of the firing. (Please add $101.00 for the solenoid kit to the price shown below.) Paragon knifemaking furnaces are available with the 12-key Sentry controller and the compact, less expensive 3-key Sentry Xpress. The solenoid kit must be ordered with the 12-key controller. Program the controller to turn on the gas at temperatures where carbon begins to form on the tool steel.
In addition to the flow meter, you will also need a regulator to reduce the pressure from the gas tank. The gas pressure to the flow meter should be less than 20 psig (psig = pounds per square inch, gauge). (Paragon does not sell the pressure regulator.)
The gas will leak out through the furnace bricks and sheet metal seams, because the furnaces are not air tight. This is why you will need a steady flow of gas at high temperatures. However, gas at room temperature will expand to over ten times its volume when injected into a firing chamber at 1000°F and above. This is why a low setting on the flow meter is adequate to prevent most scaling.
Argon gas is popular for heat treating because of its price. Please note that the gas will not support life and is heavier than air. Therefore, your shop must be well ventilated when using gas injection.

Side-Swing Furnace Door(sku: Side-Swing Furnace Door)
The prices of the knifemaking furnaces are the same whether your order your furnace with the traditional drop door or the side-swing door. The side-swing door is hinged at the side and includes the door safety switch. The rugged door is mounted on a heavy-duty hinge shaft for smooth opening.
Please note: The furnace illustrated here is the KM-24D in optional black paint. This may not be the same furnace you are ordering; the photo is used to illustrate the side-swing door, the door latch, and the door safety switch. Also, the black paint is a separate option from the side-swing door.
Firing Safety Glasses(sku: Firing Safety Glasses)
Wear firing safety glasses whenever looking into the firing chamber of a hot kiln. Filters the infra-red and ultra-violet light. Reduces glare, makes pyrometric cones easier to see.
Paragon no longer sells firing safety glasses. Instead, you can order them directly from Amazon. We recommend green #3 lenses.
