My kiln is about six months old and the lid is chipping. Can you tell me if this wear and tear is normal?

Yes, minor firebrick chipping is normal. Coat the entire inner lid surface with repair cement. Mix the cement to the consistency of cream. Brush it on, and immediately wipe it off with a rag. The cement will fill the pores of the bricks and help to protect the surface.
