Paragon Caldera XL-KS

Fire porcelain, stoneware, china, ceramics, and decals in Paragon’s Caldera XL-KS. Test glazes and glaze application ideas before running production quantities in a large studio kiln.

You will never outgrow a small kiln. If you eventually buy a larger kiln, continue to use the Caldera XL-KS for testing or small projects. Carry it with you to seminars or on vacation; hand lifts on the sides aid in moving the kiln.

The Caldera XL-KS in the Classroom

A Caldera XL-KS is a nice addition to school programs. A test kiln is relatively inexpensive. With the Caldera XL-KS, students can make gifts in time for a birthday or holiday instead of waiting until the school’s large kiln is fired. A test kiln creates enthusiasm for a clay program. Students can test glazes while they feel the momentum instead of waiting to fire them in the large kiln.

New teachers inherit bags of unlabeled clay in their classrooms. Many loads of clay have been ruined because they were fired to the wrong temperature. With a Caldera XL-KS kiln, you can easily test unlabeled clay. Teach your students to fire this little kiln as part of your clay program.

The Infinite Control Switch

The Caldera XL-KS operates without electronics or timers. It uses a reliable infinite control switch to adjust the heating rate. This switch has been proven for many years in Paragon kilns.

The infinite control switch contains a bi-metallic timer that cycles on and off. The higher the switch setting, the longer the heating elements stay on during each cycle. When the switch is turned to High, the heating elements stay on continuously.

The Orton Auto-Cone Shutoff Device

The Caldera XL-KS is equipped with the Orton Kiln Sitter Auto-Cone, a cone-activated automatic shutoff device. The Auto-Cone is dependable and accurate when loaded and fired properly.

A small pyrometric cone placed in the Auto-Cone bends to maturity and turns off the kiln. (A pyrometric cone is a small pyramid of clay that bends when the ware has received the proper amount of heat work. Cones and ceramic materials are rated by cone number.)

Note: Please monitor the kiln during firing and check it near the expected shutoff time. Do not completely depend on any shutoff device, mechanical or electronic.

Built to Last

The firebrick corners of the Caldera XL-KS are fitted together with L-shaped notches for extra strength. This type of joint lasts longer than the butted joint and the "picture frame" mitered joint found on competitive brands.

The inner and outer lid surfaces and the top rim of sidewall firebricks are hardened and sealed with a refractory coating that protects the ware from dust. The firing chamber, including the lid and bottom, is made of 3” thick firebricks, 20% thicker than standard 2 1/2” bricks. A heavy steel base supports the reversible brick bottom. No extra stand is needed.

We make the heating elements from the finest high-temperature wire available. Paragon uses heat-dissipating barrel-shaped element connectors refined and proven over many years in our kilns. The stainless steel case and lid band include case tighteners for easy maintenance.

Water-Base Paint

The Caldera XL-KS control box is painted with a durable high temperature, water-base finish. We use water-base paint because of the low emissions during spraying. This creates a safer working environment for our employees and cuts down on pollution.

The Caldera XL-KS is proudly made in America by skilled workers. Many of them have been with us for over a decade. We make kilns in Mesquite, Texas, which is about 20 minutes east of Dallas.

The Furniture Kit

The furniture kit consists of carefully selected fireclay shelves and posts for the Caldera XL-KS or Caldera XL-KS-KS. When estimating the price of the kiln, include the cost of furniture. The furniture allows you to stack multiple layers of ware. Without it, you could fire only the ware that would fit on the kiln bottom.
